2023 Veterinary Science Camps
Great news! The Zoo’s veterinary staff plans to, once again, offer its onsite veterinary camps. We will be accepting 22 campers to each of our six camps, and eligible campers will be admitted in the order that they complete the application process
Our single-day Junior Camps are suitable for rising 7th through 9th graders. Our single-day Senior Camps are suitable for 10 graders through first-year college students.
These one-of-a-kind veterinary camps bring young people to the Zoo to explore a future career in veterinary medicine. Campers practice basic veterinary procedures—giving physical exams, administering CPR, trying sutures, and more—and explore some of the specialized skills veterinarians use to care for wild animals. Most sessions are taught in the Zoo's veterinary center.
Application Process
Submit the following:
- A current transcript or report card confirming a "B" or higher grade point average.
- The name and phone number of a science teacher or veterinarian as a reference
- A completed online Veterinary Camp Application form [see below]
- A Completed Veterinary Camp Health Form (see below)
- A $5 application processing fee ($7.50 if applying to two camps, $10 if applying to all three camps)
- A $50 deposit for each camp you are applying to attend.
- Proof of an up-to-date (given within the last 12 months) COVID-19 vaccination (due 1 month before camp begins.)
* Deposits are not cashed or charged until a camper is accepted.
Our Commitment to Safety
Campers check in at the Valerie H. Schindler Wildlife Learning Center (2663 Old Cox Rd., Asheboro, NC).
Campers take a short walk to the Zoo's Veterinary Hospital Complex to attend camping sessions and to learn from the Zoo's veterinary staff. Students from the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine serve as camp counselors, assisting with some teaching assignments and conferring with campers about applying for and attending veterinary school.
COVID PROTOCOLS DURING CAMP
All campers must provide proof of vaccination.
Campers will be required to wear masks during all indoor activities except when actively drinking or eating.
Campers will maintain social distancing at all times.
