Shadow a Desert Keeper

Shadow a Desert Keeper

Team up with a Desert Zookeeper to spend the morning searching for tortoises and lizards inside the Zoo’s Magum Desert. As a shadow keeper, you will learn some of the ins and outs of caring for wildlife in this warm, sandy habitat. You may even have a chance to help care for some of these animals.
This Shadow a Desert Keeper experience will last about three hours and will primarily focus on the needs of amphibians and reptiles. However, there may be an opportunity to participate in or watch an enrichment activity associated with one of the mammals.
  • Hours: This Shadow a Vet experience begins at 8 a.m. and ends around 11 a.m. on a date agreed upon by the shadowing keeper and the Zoo’s keeper staff. This private experience can be set up for any day of the week, but we need at least two weeks’ notice to schedule a date with the zookeepers.
  • Cost: For Zoo Society members, $350; for non-members, $375. A second or third shadow keeper participant may join the group for $150 each.
  • Restrictions: The minimum age to participate is 12. A paying adult must accompany children 12 through 15 years old.
